The first few hundred pages were confusing and really political.. but once I worked through that, and understood it more, this book got a lot more interesting. I appreciate how this book built up the conflict so well and seriously left me craving the third book (which I promptly ordered lol).

Why do y’all like Dara though fr ???? I have not really liked him even since book 1 but every review loves him

This series continues to be emotionally devastating and trauma inducing. The story took off in ways I was not expecting and the twists and turns continue to shock me. Chakraborty's writing is truly magical.

The strength of this series continues to be the character work. We have a slew of characters between the first two books and Chakraborty runs your through a gambit of emotions as there are no "good guys" vs "bad guys" in this story. One moment you're rooting for one of the characters only for them to emotionally scar you the next with bigoted remarks or sheer inhumane acts. This series really grasps how complex and morally grey society can seem at times.

Magnificent. Stunning. Exceptional. No book is truly perfect but this one is as close to perfect as possible. What a follow up. I am so blown away by the prose, character depth, plot intricacies, and emotional pulls that I cannot put together any kind of analytical review. Every single character makes sense - their thoughts, goals, reasonings, actions. The plot never stops. The world building is too real for words.

Spoilers!!!!!

My only grievance is Muntadhir. He is too scared to do anything, so he just acts out to act out. His actions are for his own benefit due to fear. The only time he acts for others is his lover or his sister. That’s it. He has other influence (besides Ghassan) to listen to, and instead acts out of fear and anger because he feels powerless to do anything else. Amongst a cast of characters who ACT, for better or for worse, his spineless temper tantrums made me greatly dislike him.
