Read at the request of a 2nd grader named Molly. Can't find the words to explain but something about Princess in Black doesn't work as a read for budding feminists. On the other hand, maybe that's not Hale's intention.

Read aloud to my four and six year old girls.
They loved this one as well. My four year old wanted to read the entire thing in one sitting and I know we'll be rereading these books often. The princess/superhero mash up is so fun and when the monster wishes the Princess in Black happy birthday, both my girls were laughing so hard.
It's also a fun read aloud for adults. It's silly, but I find them engaging still (especially compared to some other early reader books out there).
Highly recommended as an early chapter book reader or as a read aloud. We are definitely continuing the series.

Second book in the series sees another fun read, if quite silly, but then again, princesses who dress in black and fight monsters is not your most normal of literature, so hey go with the flow and be entertained.

I didn't really love the first book in this series, but I really WANTED to, so I gave book #2 a chance. I'm glad I did! My kids (5yo girl, 4yo boy) absolutely love this series, and it's fun to read aloud. They can't wait for the next one. And my daughter insists on dressing in black today. :)

February 2018 - I think we read this in two sittings, and it was just as much fun as the first. I feel like there's something for every kind of kid in the story. Although it's designed for kids learning to read (simple sentences, not too many words on a page, plenty of supporting pictures), it works as a read-aloud.

Another dazzling adventure for the Princess in Black. It is her birthday but monsters keep attacking in the goat pasture wanting to eat the goats. Instead of getting to open presents the Princess must keep inventing ways to occupy her guests so she can slip away to fight. But, as monsters keep attacking will the Princess in Black be able to keep up her charade or will another Princess discover her secret identity?
Good read aloud for ages 5 and up, read alone for grades 2 and up.
