One star for Tom's characterisation in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

I know they are staples of American lit, but I just can't get into them or past the blatant racism.

I read this book as a assignment for english class and I got to say that I had a hard time with it at first. English is not my mother tongue and therefore southern american english was really hard to read.
I looked around for a audio version of it and find a really good one. So if you find this book hard to understand, I recommend you listen to it whilst reading. It helps a lot.
Anyway, this book made me feel both bored and confused but I gotta say that it also made me laugh and even enjoy some chapters as well.
Jim was my favorite character throughout the whole book. The way he thinks is amazingly different and I think that's why I liked him so much.
Also, I loved how you could follow the change in Huck. I learned to like him. And even if i didn't see much good in Tom, he had a lot of good in him that wasn't showed until the last chapters.
Overall, this might not be the book of my choice, but it's my second classic so far and I did enjoy it. It was a struggle at times but sometimes you need struggles too.

Ehh, I wasn't too fond of this book. I couldn't really connect with the characters. It did get rather interesting at the end, so I did enjoy that part!

I had to read this book for school and I hated every minute of it. Since the copy I got was so old, my mother had me read it online. I fell asleep during the first chapter, I'm just not a fan of classics about a hardheaded boy in the 1800s

I listened to Huck Finn on audiobook several years ago when I had a job that was primarily filing. I remember being terribly confused by the plot because it simultaneously didn’t seem to go anywhere and everywhere at the same time. I figured it was just my inattention to audiobooks and decided I’d try again later to actually read it.

Flash forward to present day, when my handsome leatherbound copy has been sitting unread on my shelf for 3 years now. I have been dreading the reread of this famous novel, but I knew it must be done eventually. Since this week is Banned Book Week, I decided now is as good a time as ever. Grumble Grumble.

Unfortunately, I am apparently still one of the very few people in the world of literature who dislike The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The plot still simultaneously goes nowhere and everywhere at the same time, and the dialects are near impossible to read in visual format (that WAS easier to listen to via audiobook). I mean, even Twain himself says by way of dedication:

Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot.

I still haven’t read Tom Sawyer. I know some day I must, but I will drag my feet even harder now. Can you see the ruts?
