Midway through chapter four and I couldn’t do it. Graphic sex scenes, full on sat nav-like street-by-street directions, and the fact that he could supposedly remember all these weirdly specific details decades later? I had seen the graphic violence warning, and I decided I didn’t want to stick around for those either.

sono passate quasi tre settimane e ancora ci penso, e mi chiedo quando riuscirò a trovare un altro libro che mi catturi e mi tenga così in ostaggio — qui i personaggi ed i fatti sono così reali che ti ritroverai a cercarli su google

l’ossessione che il Bret adolescente prova nei confronti del nuovo studente Robert Mallory è palpabile, le crisi di coppia e le litigate tra Susan e Thom sono reali, le preoccupazioni di Debbie sono comprensibili, il fingere di essere qualcun altro di Ryan è accettabile, il voler passare inosservato di Matt è cosa ovvia… le sensazioni che trasmette questo libro sono autentiche!

trovo difficile parlare a fondo di un libro che ho amato così tanto, ho sempre paura di non dargli il giusto valore o di svelare troppo quindi mi fermerò qui. non sono certa che questa sia davvero una recensione ma quello di cui sono certa è che ne Le schegge nessuno è sincero, tutti nascondono un segreto e che leggendolo proverai diversi stati d’animo, a volte ti sembrerà quasi un incubo ma non riuscirai a smettere. alla fine sentirai un vuoto incolmabile, un senso di smarrimento, ti farai delle domande e accetterai il fatto che questo libro non sia stato scritto per nessuno se non per Bret stesso, o forse no?

5 stelle perché non posso darne di più, e non le do facilmente. Ho letto recensioni sul fatto che è un libro troppo lungo, e che sarebbe stato perfetto con 200/300 pagine in meno, ma personalmente non avrei mai voluto che finisse, avrei volentieri letto un altro centinaio di pagine. Mi ha tenuta incollata completamente per giorni (mentre mangiavo, mentre ~studiavo~, mentre sistemavo casa) come non mi succedeva da anni con un libro. Le ultime 350 pagine le ho finite in un giorno (sto scrivendo questa recensione alle 5 del mattino, appena finito). Per me questo libro è semplicemente perfetto così, ho vacillato sul finale, ma riflettendoci non avrei desiderato qualcosa di diverso. Primo ma non ultimo libro che leggerò di questo autore, sicuramente.
Ora ho disperatamente bisogno che qualcuno dei miei amici lo legga PER PARLARNE, HEAR ME OUT
Ps: sicuramente non per persone con stomaco “debole”, e non il massimo mentre mangiate.

I genuinely wanted to like this a lot more than I actually did :(

DNF at around 200 pages. I attempted to trudge through the never-ending barrage of descriptions pertaining to the usual glitz, glamour, and genitalia I associate with Ellis, but it truly lacked any of the tact and purposefulness this time around. The new opportunities that come with autofiction might be responsible for this, but I couldn't help rolling my eyes every time the fictional character Bret and the author Ellis blatantly indulged in their own glory. There was only so much I could read about the 17-year-old's sexual prowess and how much of a 80s cocaine-induced wet dream he was (BEFORE the real plot even got introduced!) before chucking the book into the corner and never seeing it again. It's sad; when I saw that the premise for this novel, I was very excited. A serial killer... among your high school friend group? The suspense, the dread, the everything! But the final product (or as much as I read of it) paled terribly in comparison. For me, it was pretentious, over-indulgent, and just gross in ways that were hinted at in Ellis' previous works and entirely mask-off here.

(But seriously... the misogyny? It would be silly to claim that this problem hasn't been apparent for a while in the Ellis-verse [American Psycho, Rules of Attraction, Less Than Zero, ALL OF THEM], but the autofiction designation here makes it so much worse for me. The sex scenes between Bret and his beard are abhorrent. It's not unreasonable to think that a gay man could write about not enjoying a sexual experience with a woman due to his orientation without dehumanizing her and reducing her body to a thing of disgust. The guise of satire doesn't separate him from this GLARING problem in his books.)
