TW: Rape and molestation
3
This book went from fever dream to exhausting journey for me, back and forth continuously. I can't say it was pleasant or enjoyable to read, but it was heavy in a very real way. This is the story of a boy, fleeing his home, and avoiding those who wish to bring him back to the corruption of it.
This is one of those stories that feels very small, which is contrasted with the large and serious subject matter. You can't imagine the protagonist going on past the last page, nor the rest of the world. You never learn enough about the setting to get a solid feel. Those are things that deeply impact how I feel about a book, unfortunately.
There is a raw emotion in this story, no matter how vague or muddy the details. It's a very human story, and you feel the panic, and the exhaustion, and the desperation of this poor boy's journey. It's really horrifying to read, as it should be. It's horribly realistic.
