Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

5.0

Such an amazing read. This book resonated with me on several levels (e.g. seeking approval/love from a family member, depression at losing a loved one, etc.). Having food as the tie that connects the author to her mother was so profound. I've known people to use photographs, perfume, clothes, and many other things to remind them of their loved ones but this is one of the few instances where I've seen food be that medium. I enjoyed being able to learn about Korean culture and I loved getting to see brief glimpses into their food, fashion, and music. The struggle for identity was also a big thing in the book and I cannot imagine what it's like to face that at such a young age and struggle with it throughout the book. It was such an eye-opening experience and an emotional rollercoaster. I'd do it all again gladly.
