The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne

5.0

Rating: 5/5

The Shadow of the Gods is John Gwynne's newest book series that follows three very different people all looking for something different as war and Gods are spoken about around them.

Now, I first want to say that I am a huge fan of John Gwynne as I've loved everything that he has written! And I am a big fan of this cover as giant dragons really grab my attention!

And you might think there is a "but" coming. There isn't. I'm just a huge fan and I needed to state that first and foremost.

Okay okay, so the book. What did I like? Pretty much everything to nobody's surprise!

The writing style, like all of Gwynne's books, is super easy to get into and makes me forget that I'm flying through a huge fantasy book. I could read for hours and hours without realizing it as the writing is just that good!

I was also a pretty big fan of the humor, which I don't think I've seen any reviews really talking about so maybe I'm just an easily amused person, but I loved it! The sly jokes and the teasing between characters in the book had me DYING and I just absolutely loved it! Also, there is a talking head who really had me laughing!

As far as characters go, I wasn't at all surprised by how amazing they were written or how tangible they felt! For having such action-heavy books, Gwynne never forgets the importance of good character development, even for the minor characters! In The Shadow of the Gods, we get the POV of three characters who are all very different, there was never a time when I was bored with one POV and I never wanted to hurry up and get back to a certain POV. And of course, the amazing animal companions Vesli and Spert! I loved them and I hope we get more of them in the future books!

Now as far as negatives go, I don't really have any. But I will say that the giant cover dragon did not appear until the very end! Which okay, good job at keeping me hooked, and sure, the ending was really good because of the whole buildup. But still!

Anyways, I don't think anyone is surprised that this is one of my new favorites.

Now go and read this immediately! It was so good and you would only be doing yourself a favor!
