Firstly, thank you so much to S.M. Gaither for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I am a huge fan of her writing, and I’m ecstatic that I’ve now been given the honour of enjoying a few of her books as ARCs, and unsurprisingly this one didn’t disappoint.

Set in the same world as Shadow and Crowns, but with a new FMC we see Gaithers writing at her best. Strong, independent and a little bit sassy are my favourite kind of FMC’s and Karys fits the bill. Gaither is also really good at writing characters with flaws, ones who are not always perfect. Karys has OCD, and finds patterns in everything which helps her control her emotions and stabilise herself. This is wonderfully and cleverly portrayed, it grounds her as well as being hugely beneficial during the story.

This has everything you would expect in a well written fantasy book, intricate and unique magic system alongside gods who just love to cause chaos, adorable animal companions, enemies to lovers, once horse, hidden identities, he falls first and betrayal. Obviously there is very much a sprinkling of spice too!

The end had me gripped, I just couldn’t put it down and the cliffhanger is excellent. I’m already excited for the next one in this duology, and this one hasn’t even been released properly yet!
