Room by Emma Donoghue

5.0

I actually watched the trailer before reading this book, and I have to say, the trailer made me curious. I remembered that my English teacher also recommended us to read [b:Room|7937843|Room|Emma Donoghue|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1344265419s/7937843.jpg|9585076] and [b:Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking|40102|Blink The Power of Thinking Without Thinking|Malcolm Gladwell|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1440763417s/40102.jpg|1180927]

Basically, I thought that since the book is narrated by a 5-year-old boy, the book would be boring. eventually I started reading the book because the movie has good reviews and I found the book in the library. So why not?

But as I turned the pages, I found myself getting sucked in further and further into Jack's World and his distorted image of the meaning of life and I watched as he transformed into a unique boy, who could see the beauty outside 'Room'.

I was impressed with Donoghue's writing style and the way readers are able to see everything in Jack's perspective and the way she gradually develops Jack who is inside the Room to Jack who is now free, so brilliantly. But, I do think that the way Jack feels about Room is quite preposterous at times. Maybe it's a psychology thing. The pace of the story was just right. It didn't feel rushed or dragged.

What I liked: Most authors usually avoid showing their characters weaknesses, but it is clear that Ma is facing difficulty in adapting to the outside world. She thinks that she has changed so much that she may not survive in the new world. Also, I am impressed by how Donoghue depicts Jack's reactions to everything. It must be really difficult to create a character who has never been outside! All his questions...his understandings! It's really realistic.

What I disliked: The ending. It was not a resolution. I think an epilogue would be better.

Just to tell readers that Jack and Ma has gone to a new direction would be nice. (Maybe a scene from the court?)
