The Writing Life by Annie Dillard

4.0

If I wasn't already painfully aware, I now know I may never be a writer. When the author asked her student, aspiring writer, if s/he loved "sentences," I almost cried because my answer is, "I don't." Sentences, sentence structure, and words have always been a struggle. I am simple. I like story. Now, how can I overcome this obstacle, this most necessary of writing requirements, and learn to love sentences? Is this even something possible to learn? Basically this book is one anecdote, short essay, and thought, after another. It causes the reader, the wannabe writer, to reflect and think about her relationship to her own personal writing life. It's beautifully and effortlessly written, so much so I hope it inspires you great written works. As for me, I found it very real and in that realness and reflection, a tad bit bleak.
