The Best of Eagle by Marcus Morris

3.0

A fun anthology/ scrap book of an omnibus detailing the things that made Eagle the institution that it was. There’s a very hearty, masculine thread of Christianity that runs through all the stories and a lot of the columns that would be very easy to mock if you didn’t realise that it was being very genuinely presented and was a cornerstone of the philosophy behind the magazine itself. However, a lot of the filler material - advertisements and editorial material and so forth - is very obviously marketed at boys in a way that hasn’t aged well at all. But, by crikey, the artwork is superb. Dan Dare was a beautiful-looking comic strip and his stablemates are equally well-presented.
