What It’s About: When a hurricane hits during the filming of a reality show on a remote island, the survivors must band together in order to last long enough to be rescued. But someone seems determined to take them out before that happens.
Plot: I am a sucker for any thriller where the characters are trapped somewhere. I mean, if you weren’t, you think you’d just leave at some point, right? This book takes that concept to a whole new level because it’s not just about thwarting a murderer, it’s about trying to survive in a much more literal way. And the drama of everyone having signed up for a reality show and at least a few of them expecting to get famous just adds to the intensity of the story. Also, that ending? Everything I could have ever dreamed of.
Style: Ware has the thriller style mastered perfectly. The narrative is snappy and moves quickly. It reveals just enough to keep you turning that page until you can’t stop before you’re done. It’s easy to understand, descriptive, and keeps everything interesting.
Trigger Warnings: Hurricane, both accidental death and murder, abusive relationship, general toxic dudebro-ness.
Final Thoughts: I try not to include spoilers in my reviews, but I have to this time. Four final girls working together to take out the misogynistic abuser? Yes, please. I will read that all day. And then they protected each other even after the fact. I cannot get enough. This was a fantastic read, and definitely worth a look if you want a different kind of thriller. To me, they usually involve snow or creepy houses, not the beach. I love both of those settings, just to be clear, but this one was a little off the beaten path for me, and I enjoyed that.
Graphic: Death, Misogyny, Physical abuse, Sexism, Suicide, Toxic relationship, Grief, Medical trauma, Murder, Alcohol, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Eating disorder
