Illuminating description of the GDR and what it looked like living under surveillance. I’ve seen and read about Ostalgie, but never realized why it would be bizarre till I read this.

The only thing I don’t like about this book is that she kept referring to the GDR as a socialist state, whereas it was communist—I understand that they referred to themselves as socialist (auf Deutsch), but they weren’t.
