Truly obsessed with this book. Murderbot has fast become one of my favorite characters (deeply anxious, disenchanted by the roles its forced into, highly protective of people who treat them like a person, and less interested in vengeance than it is in Media That Makes Them Feel Things? Who could've guessed I and every other AuDHD Zillenial who got their hands on these books would foster a deep fondness for this SecUnit?). Martha Wells is excellent at crafting a narrative that's funny and fast-paced and exciting and then hitting you with a line that makes your chest cavity feel like it's imploding.

"Jokes! Social Awkwardness! Alien Monsters! That crushing feeling you get when you're awake at four in the morning that no matter how much you playact at normalcy and play the games of society expected of you, you will never be a person to those who decide how you will be treated. Space Corporation Conspiracy!"

^that's the book! And it's all told in a delightfully charming voice that makes the novella even faster to get through. I usually have some trouble with novellas in that I feel that they don't contain Enough. Enough what, you may ask? Usually it's a combination of character development and plot, since I've generally found that shorter fiction writers do a great job of giving you just enough world/setting , but if anything was missing in ASR objectively, I didn't feel it. Some of the action moved fast, but never in a way that felt unsatisfying or lacking when combined with the other elements of the story. I truly can't recommend this series enough.
