Girls on the Verge by Sharon Biggs Waller

5.0

Girls on the Verge follows Camille who got pregnant and wants an abortion. Set in 2014 Texas, the system is set against her. Together with her new friend Annabelle and her oldest friend Bea they go on a road trip to go where she needs to go.

What a beautiful book on the struggle for reproductive rights for womxn (or people with uteruses) in Southern America. The friendship, the heavy story surrounding abortion but also the light-hearted moments the girls shared on their road trip. Beautiful and amazing. I hope this book will get more attention in the following years - right now it has only 1.871 ratings on Goodreads - because I believe it truly deserves it. I believe this book can help a lot of people who struggled with this decision and can recognise themselves in it.

The book goes back and forth between how Camille got pregnant and what options she already tried before Annabelle offers to drive her out of state. And while on the road, the three girls have amazing conversations. Bea is very religious but goes on the trip to support her friend but still has a difficult time accepting the abortion and what an abortion is. Annabelle, on the other hand, is very much pro-choice. The girls also have fun during this difficult time of Camille, talking about their first times among other things that are too great to spoil.

Spoiler I am unsure what I think of Camille writing a letter to the soul of her fetus. But honestly, if this method helped her cope with her decision then I'd support her. Maybe it was just too cheesy for me.

I honestly cannot recommend this book enough.
