The Alienist by Caleb Carr
5.0
I read this book years ago, but i'm just getting around to writing a review. I'm usually a strict sci-fi/fantasy reader, but occasionally I will pick up a thriller or mystery if it is not in a modern day setting. In this case, the story takes place in the late 19th century and revolves around an attempt to catch a "Jack the Ripper" style serial killer that is terrorizing the citizens of New York City. I remember reading this book in 3 days because I simply couldn't put it down. It is engrossing and suspenseful, as well as a little creepy. Caleb has never recaptured the brilliance of this book in my opinion. It's a shame really, because his writing is brilliant here. Pick it up and read it, you won't be disappointed.
