The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman

4.0

29-year-old Nina Hill has always lived a small, quiet, meticulously planned and organized life, and that's exactly how she likes it. That's exactly what she plans for, and she has no intentions of ever turning her life upside down and shaking it out for all that its worth, but unfortunately for Nina, sometimes we can't control the life-turned-upside-down events that befall us. When her father, previously unknown to her for the duration of her life, passes away, Nina finds out that she has all kinds of family living nearby. That was unexpected. Also, it turns out a member of a rival trivia team has a keen eye for her. That's alarming. But anxious, charming, socially awkward, endearing Nina takes it all in stride. That is, if you were to stumble several times while you were striding.

I loved this book so much! I enjoyed every single character (with maybe the exception of Nina's mom, she's a bit of a drag) and especially our titular heroine. Abbi Waxman's voice really shines here and lends itself to a fantastic and high-definition rendering of a woman that I think many Goodreads members can relate to. So many readers will see themselves in Nina. Cat-lovers, sufferers of anxiety, and those of us with a tendency to put our foot in our mouths will feel as though we just found our new best friend in her and many other friendships in the cast of characters she interacts with.

The city of Los Angeles also shines in this novel. I listen to a lot of comedy podcasts by comedians based out of LA so naturally hear all kinds of fun things about everyday life there. While I enjoy visiting the city, it's hearing about the day-to-day there that keeps me the most entertained. And boy is Los Angeles a character of its own!

I noticed that the Goodreads page for this book suggests that it is the first in what will come to be a series. I can't wait to have a chance to read more from Nina. This was so sharp, witty, and heartwarming with excellent and believable dialogue between smart characters. Highly recommended to my friends who haven't yet had the chance!
