DNF at 58%. Even though there is some beautiful writing, this is not for me right now. I’m having difficulty connecting with the main character.....it’s a gritty read without redemption or hope amidst the tragedy. I think the references to Jacob’s sexual experiences could have been edited out. I’m not sure what purpose they served. I skimmed the last couple of chapters and I think Jacob did change and grow into a different person, but I can’t generate enough interest to get there. I normally like histfic and have read some difficult content, so I’m not exactly sure why I’m giving up on this one. This is not a book I’ll recommend; however, others have given the book a high rating so read more reviews before making your reading choice.
