ITS GETTING SO CRAZY UP IN HERE
i'm obsessed with this universe, and this installation was a thrill! if the first book was stressful, this book was the whole damn aneurysm. all the different moving plots and characters were so fun, and the clues to the mystery were clever and genuinely intriguing. all the red herrings and the suspects!! so suspicious. that plot twist at the end got me so good too lol i should've guessed.
i loved how many characters we retained from book 1, and that we actually got more out of them this time around. despite the fact that he's still a shitty guy i really liked the deeper dive into steven and finlay's relationship, i appreciate that he's not just a caricature of a cheating husband. i also liked that teresa was back!! what a wild character reveal, i know that she and amy are supposed to be character foils for vero and finlay but those girlies fr just be doin shit lmao.
as great as it is that finlay has a supportive family (georgia and her parents), my god georgia is slow. no offense but like, finlay is out here committing so many felonies and georgia is blissfully unaware, she must be a terrible cop, or she has the worlds biggest blinders. similar thoughts for nick, who actually IS aware of finlay's exploits, gives her classified information, and continues to be all pikachu shocked face about it when she uses it to commit more crimes. he's like fully aware of all the shit she's doing but he's so horny for her he literally doesn't care. oh to be as sexy as finlay donovan, to get a hot cop who she literally isn't even dating to commit obstructions of justice for her. he's just rock hard for her all the time.
speaking of nick, i guess i shouldn't be so surprised that this nick vs julian thing is still going on. if you know me at all i'm not a big fan of love triangles, but it's a testament to cosimano's light hand that i'm not sick and tired of it yet. i'm pleasantly surprised that the narrative isn't asking me to pull for one man or another, which makes it all the more bearable. i like that both men are reasonable nice people with their own pros and cons, and that finlay just takes her time deciding who can be the partner she needs.
SPEAKING OF PARTNERS. it absolutely cannot be unintentional that the narrative keeps hinting that vero is the perfect partner for finlay. like i don't actually think that finlay and vero will end up together :(( but all i'll say is that it's giving me major korrasami vibes. i absolutely love their relationship, but i kept anticipating some kind of tension, some kind of fight and it never came. maybe in book 3? im glad they portray a united front, and i love their loyalty.
can't wait for book 3, finally getting to the big meaty mafia plotline!
