I get it, but I didn’t love it. I understand what folks respond to, the writing and world building are top notch but I didn’t feel connected to the protagonist. I didn’t care about her. I can appreciate the book even if I felt held at arms length.
Reread: I think I appreciated this book more on a reread. I still find Lauren to be pretty annoying, but maybe that is the point? I think the commentary on religion is good, but maybe unintended. I found the book to be way more graphic and upsetting the second time around. I am more impressed with the foresight Butler had to see what our world can/could become.
