A Tempest of Tea by Hafsah Faizal
2.5
“She was still a child, but when you saw the cruelty of the world firsthand, you became a little cruel yourself.”
this book has all the aspects that could make it into an amazing storyline and characterization, but sadly all the great ideas got wasted because of how it is written and described as well as the plot which doesn’t stand that strong.
since the beginning I felt like a left-out reader because I couldn’t sympathise with any of the characters, the writer trying to make the characters as mysterious as they can while in reality I can guess what they are going to do as well as why they do that. those ' mysterious masks’ just made me feel so distant from the characters, that ended up making me not care about any of them
the plot is so rushed and without any deep meaning to it. in one paragraph you read how the characters planned their mission, in the paragraph after that they are already on their way to the location. like it doesn’t make sense how the storyline could go that fast without any explanation to its reader.
the romance subplot that was being thrown into this book felt so hasty. the main character and their love interest didn’t have a deep connection when they suddenly hooked up.
one of the regrets I have regarding this book is about colonialism, this is one of the topics that got highlighted on the few pages in the beginning and I hope the writer could take this topic and elaborate more, or make the story revolve around the struggle of living under colonialism. but as the story goes by it recedes and becomes hazy, feeling like it’s only happened in the past.
I felt so disappointed because I do wish I could love this book
