Sick Fux by Tillie Cole
5.0
⚠️ Content warning: I highly recommend you look the trigger warnings up before reading this book to determine if it’s something you want to read. This book is for those with an acquired taste to dark romance novels with a side of trauma. If you are new to reading dark romance, this is not the book to try first to test the waters.
Now that we have that out of the way…
Sick Fux of the most unique dark romance books I’ve ever read. It was an experience in and of itself from start to finish. Tillie outdid herself creatively when she wrote this book. I can appreciate her imagination and artistic ability in telling this very dark story. To start off, we meet Ellis, the female protagonist, as a child as she is introduced to Heathen, a troubled boy that was shipped off to live with his father. Ellis and Heathen immediately form a close friendship as children, and bond over Ellis’s love for Alice in Wonderland. Unfortunately, their worlds are turned upside down and the two of them are ripped apart from each other for 11 years. When Heathen (Rabbit) comes back for Ellis (Dolly), he finds her mentally retreated into her former childlike self. Heathen makes it his mission to avenge himself and Dolly from what was stolen from the both of them.
This is not your typical dark romance. If you are open to a new experience with an atypical ending, this might be the book for you. Keep an open mind, because this book will challenge you and also tug at all of your heartstrings.
The reason I rated this 5 stars is a little unconventional for me. The characters stuck with me and their story affected me deeply. I thought Tillie’s use of Alice in Wonderland to tell this story was moving and incredibly creative. Those that can appreciate a dark story like this should give the book a try.
This book is banned from Kindle and is only available in paperback.
