The Woman in Me by Britney Spears

3.0

Ok, this is a very hard book to review. On one hand, this was very poorly written…no other way to get around it. It felt like one giant ramble despite being very short. On the other hand, it was honest and is going to be a great vehicle to Britney Spears making her own money!

I don’t think she was ready to write this. The fact that Britney couldn’t be the voice to the audio version because it would be too difficult/fresh shines light on this. I don’t think you need to be “perfectly and fully healed” to write a memoir, but it felt WAY too far from being in “a better place.” At times it honestly felt exploitative on my end as a reader to listen to all of it.

I also read Paris Hilton’s book within the past few months and between their two stories it’s simply heartbreaking to know what the pop stars and icons of my growing up years were going through. Even though this memoir was far from my favorite, I hope that Britney sharing her truth will continue to change the way we treat young women.
