Catwoman: Lonely City is incredible. Cliff Chiang wrote, illustrated, coloured and lettered all four issues by himself and all his efforts come together so seamlessly to create this unique story. This series is set ten years after a massacre known as Fools’ Night claimed the lives of Batman, Nightwing, Commissioner Gordon and the Joker. Mayor Harvey Dent has cleaned up Gotham, which is no longer a home to vigilantes or villains. Selina Kyle, now 55 years old, has just been released after a decade in prison and she is still haunted by the events of that night ten years ago. Batman’s last words to her hint at a secret hidden inside the Batcave, so she decides to pull off one last heist to uncover it.
Everything about this series is excellent. The pacing is perfect, the artwork is gorgeous, the story is real, and the writing is solid. There’s also something comforting about this story—about seeing characters I’ve spent half my life with grow up and move on while also keeping the most fundamental parts of themselves whole. It was truly a delightful surprise each time a BatFamily character or villain showed up, and I was excited to see some of my favourites included. The way each character evolved was fitting, and it was fun to see how they had changed. It's rare for superhero comics to show characters age like this, and it was great to read a story about an aging hero and all of the hardships that come with it. I love this series and it’s definitely a new favourite.
