Bloom Into You, Vol. 1 by Nakatani Nio

5.0

Finding queer manga that isn't fetishistic is challenging, sometimes feeling a bit impossible, but "Bloom Into You" is something really special that refuses to follow those stereotypes. It's a love story but also a story about love as a whole. Exploring the concept of love and falling in love through the two main characters is fascinating, a subject that I'm happy is being explored more and more as society learns more about sexuality and romantic attractions.

The story is about the blooming (hehe) relationship between two female high schoolers: 2nd year, Touko Nanami, and 1st year, Yuu Koito, who is our narrator of the story. Both struggle with the concept of falling in love, but Yuu especially struggles with it. Touko falls for Yuu, but she can't quite reciprocate those feelings.

My only real gripe about this story is how quickly Touko falls for Yuu, but looking at it from the context of manga and being high schoolers, impulsive feelings and a potential short run (as a manga through serialization), it's not that big of a deal to me. I'm eager to purchase more volumes to follow this blossoming romance.
