The Forgiving Self: The Road from Resentment to Connection by Robert Karen
Did not finish book.
The idea of a book-length exploration of forgiveness - concept, practice, experience - is fascinating, but the dated tone and poor organization of Karen’s work make it hard to read. There were multiple points where I was on the verge of becoming too bored or distracted to continue, and then found some passage particularly insightful and useful. However, I think that the effort of finishing it is not worth the payoff for me. I respect Karen for acknowledging and embracing the power of anger. I think that there are important, dark elements of the human psyche that he does not dismiss. If you are interested in forgiveness, try this out, and see what you can take from it. I don’t regret the time I spent reading it, even though I don’t plan to continue.
