The Walking Dead, Vol. 1: Days Gone Bye by Robert Kirkman

I think this is the most unique book I’ve ever read. The narrator remains unnamed and is unreliable from the very start. The author chops and changes between first person and second person perspective and the narrator flits from subject to subject, each more cynical than the last. It’s stark and refreshing - so different from anything I’ve read.

There are a number of big ideas explored through the book such as reality versus perceived reality, toxic masculinity, the negative impact of consumerism, a culture of alienation, etc.

I enjoyed the book and was left questioning quite a few things. The biggest question I have is whether Marla even real. She didn’t interact with any other characters and it seems unlikely that our narrator met someone as twisted as himself.

Excellent read. Very short, too.
