The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin

5.0

THE OBELISK GATE is the second book in The Broken Earth trilogy. It has been many months since I read the first book, The Fifth Season, but I found it relatively easy to step back into the story. Normally I would summarize the synopsis in my own words, but this synopsis is already so bare that I'll invite you to read it on your own.

N.K. Jemisin is a fantastic writer. I am thoroughly shook by her impeccable writing prowess. Her stories are filled with fully fleshed characters and complex plots that truly boggle the mind. Her storytelling is truly immaculate, wholly captivating and kept me engrossed me from start to finish. She injects several jaw-dropping twists effortlessly throughout the novel.

THE OBELISK GATE, like The Fifth Season, features multiple POVs. I enjoyed that the POVs were different here than the previous book and each added so much depth and complexity to the story. Each character is pivotal to the plot and are so well developed.

The plot is a work of pure genius and is oh so cryptic. The trajectory of the story is hard to envision because of this, and while this sounds like a bad thing... it's really not. Jemisin keeps you where she wants you, somewhere between the dark and the light. She gives you only the pieces that you need for that moment, and nothing of what is to come until you need it. It's a truly beautiful story. A mind twisting work of art.

I truly cannot wait to see what book three will bring!
