Broadway Butchery by C.S. Poe
5.0
This is my favourite of the series so far. Larkin and Doyle are firmly established as characters and a couple (plus this book had only a tiny smidge of Noah, the Worst Character Ever) so we could get right down to the mystery at hand. Poe definitely has a way of setting up a mystery/crime plot where you don't know what is going to be the outcome but you really want to find out.
Larkin has really come out of his shell since the first book and is more of a fun personality, despite being so complex and shattered as a person. And Doyle is truly his soulmate - they're precious together and, even though each of their own traumatic pasts could really put a dampener on things, they're really understanding of each other's needs. Definitely a #relationshipgoals kind of couple.
New York also really comes alive here and is almost another character in the book. If you're not from the area and/or want to know more about the sleeze that was Time Squares in the 1980s, I recommend watching Crime Scene: The Time Square Murders (Netflix) as a companion to this book and to get a real good glimpse about the peep shows, burlesque, and abundance of other underground sex work that was happening plus the actual brutal crime it attracted.
This is definitely a thrilling series and I can't wait for the next installment. Maybe we'll finally find out who this "Moriarty" is to Larkin's "Sherlock".
