The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling
5.0
This was a lot different than I expected, but still really enjoyed it! honestly, I was expecting it to freak me out a lot more than it actually did, but then I thought Tunnelers were going to be humanoid monsters that were a constant threat rather than Graboid-like creatures that weren't present for the majority of the book. Honestly, though I think it worked better for me this way, because I'm pretty sure that's what had been putting it off for as long as I did.
A few things I want to touch on. First, the worldbuilding and the tech used to keep Gyre alive during her climb was really fascinating and one of my favorite parts of the book. The other thing is Gyre and Em's relationship. I wasn't sure how much I would like it going into the book, but the bond between two people formed out of desperation and necessity is apparently something that I enjoy.
Initially, I rated this four stars because I didn't think that I would feel the need to reread it, but it continued to stick in my head for several days after I finished it, and I actually already really wanting to reread it already so I bumped my rating up. There was a lot that was left unanswered, and that would normally really bother me, but I really think that that works for this book. Not giving definite reasons for everything that happened gave a whole other level to the thriller.
