Fall of Kings by David Gemmell, Stella Gemmell
5.0
This is the final book in the Troy trilogy and without doubt, it delivers on every front, characterisation, plot and action. It is also an emotionally powerful journey, as characters you have come to know and care about in the last two books, meet their separate fates.
There are two standout scenes to me, the first being the duel between Hektor and Achilles, which is superbly written and has a conclusion that doesn't feel unsatisfactory in any way. The second scene is Mr Gemmell's interpretation of how Troy was finally overrun by the use of the Trojan horse, this is just one of many examples related throughout the trilogy that shows how mythological events could have happened and also how actual events could be romanticised into mythology.
This was the last book written by David Gemmell, being published after his death in 2006 and as such, both it and the trilogy are a fitting epitaph to a great author.
