City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

So this is still part of my mortal instruments marathon and wow. This book is just, filler.
Weirdly enough, I find it better than the first book in terms of pacing, but maybe it's because I already read the first book when I was 15 (or about a quarter of it) and that was a slog to get through, because I had to do some of it twice.
But, the book is filler, over dramatic filler. And it was also very predictable, you know I was wondering what supernatural creature Simon was going to turn into to remain relevant to the story so. Then all the Jace/Clary oooooh you're my sibling, this is groooooss. I mean, they really shouldn't be that broken up about it, they didn't meet until they were 15/16. Can someone tell them that it's not the end of the world if your teen romance happened, and not the end of the world if it can't work? Anyway, unnecessary drama on both ends, the incest stuff seems like a way just to drag the love triangle along. It'd be different if she actually had any sort of feelings for Simon, but she just feels like she has to because he's her best friend? And look, I know people point at Jace for being a jerk, and he is, but why can't Simon just let go? Just because you're friends with a girl doesn't mean they gotta be your girlfriend eventually, the way he irrationally hates Jace is grating to me, idk maybe I just wanted SOMEONE to be a voice of reason here.
Why does Clary continue to hate any girl that's pretty? Why can't she have any other female friends? Also why are Clary and Jace so into each other, like what? They knew each other for a week in the first book and now they just can't get over their forbidden love? It's so stupid, any normal person would just discard that shit this isn't some "fate" nonsense. If they had been together for at least a months even, it'd be different, but why is their love worth so much lmao. It's pointless tension and drama, I don't get the point.
The Inquisitor has potential to be a good character but she holds such a large idiot ball that I'm like 🙄
Mfw every single one of the characters is OP as shit 🙄 🙄 🙄
Whyyyyy is Clary upset that Simon broke up with her? She's so selfish. She is literally one of THE worst MCs on the planet, she's bland and has enough of a moral compass, but that's it. Jesus.
Conclusion: I don't think anything is going to make me like Clary or Jace. Jace is a jerk who doesn't think things through just is ~speshul, and Clary is just selfish who doesn't think things through and is ~speshul. Also all the foreshadowing to Jace not actually being Clary's brother makes me wanna roll my eyes to the sky.
