Shubeik Lubeik by Deena Mohamed
5.0
Graphic novels are a fantastic way to consume art. They have a way of bringing the written word to life and perhaps create a more immersive world than just the written word does.
I am such a huge fan of graphic novels! When I first saw the illustrations from SHUBEIK LUBEIK by Deena Mohamed, I knew I had to read it. What a wonderful book this was to read. It has easily become one of my favorite graphic novels. Just take a look at the few photos I included, and you’ll see just how much talent Deena Mohamed has.
Originally written in Arabic, SHUBEIK LUBEIK takes place in an alternative world, set in Cairo, where wishes exist. Set in three parts captured in black and white illustrations with color illustrations in the interludes between each part. Throughout the story, we meet three different characters, Aziza, Nour, and Shokry, who navigate their world with a wish for a change.
Each character has something they’re struggling with and we’re brought along their journey of how they make their own choices with a wish. I most connected with Nour’s struggle of depression and feeling lost. Who hasn’t felt that from time to time.
I would highly highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys magical realism elements and complex characters. The illustrations are easy to follow and would be enjoyed by many! This is Deena Mohamed’s debut, so I’ll be eagerly awaiting more books and illustrations from her!
