The premise of this book holds great potential, as do several of the characters that appear within it. Unfortunately, it didn't manage to build on that potential, in my opinion, leaving both the plot and the characters as an underwhelming reflection of what they could have been.
A lot of the plot is based around two battles, with a chase and preparations for the second battle thrown in between them, however, a fair amount of it just felt forced and needed to be done just to advance the story. The same was true of several of the characters, who felt like caricatures of a character type, thus lacking engaging personalities.
These drawbacks did spoil my overall enjoyment of the story, plus there were several plot twists which I could see coming well in advance, as well as a few that just seemed contrived.
I sort of enjoyed it, but not enough to read any more of the series.
