A jaunty novel that deliberately avoids overstating the melodrama of a range of familial relationship issues and crisis , rather the author chooses to write with sensitivity and dry wit that helped endear the cast of complex and imperfect characters to me . The final section of the book plays out like a farcical stage play and is expertly managed by the authors hand . I found the explicit nature of some of the scenes unnecessary and slightly jarring within the otherwise  “ gentle “ tone  .
