Acts of Violet by Margarita Montimore
3.0
I have mixed feelings about this book. I did like the writing. I thought it was good and the relationship between the sisters was well developed and the best part of the story. But that ending, y'all. I really hated it. If it had ended right after they decided to go on vacation and skipped the last handful of pages, I'd probably have a better rating for this book. I didn't want an answer to how Violet escaped and whether she was alive or not. Mostly because it is difficult to make that satisfying. I have a hard time with books that have a "is it real or is it something supernatural" plot line. I think it's kind of hard to pull those off and for me, it's easier to enjoy the story if I never learn what actually happened. That sense of mystery is usually more interesting to me than the truth. The relationship Sasha has with the legacy her sister left behind was more interesting to me. I do think it could have had more nuance since Violet especially was portrayed as a caricature of a brilliant but volatile artist. The last few pages of the book made it worse and really, cutting those out would have made it a better read to me. Overall, it is an interesting book and if you like books that play with the "real vs. supernatural" trope, you'll probably enjoy it more than I did.
