Superman: Secret Identity by Kurt Busiek
4.0
I wanted to rewrite this review after reflecting on it.
This was so different then I expected. I usually don't care for Superman, but I really enjoyed this.
This is an alternate universe Superman and thought honestly this would be a safer bet. I’m not completely ignorant to Superman and his world anyways. This Clark Kent isn’t the one we know. He was named after the fictional Superhero and got the powers later in life as a teenager and not born into it.
This was nice because it changed something that doesn’t seem that significant and able to keep Superman, well, Superman. Instead of turning him evil or what have you. He hated Superman before he got the powers because he would get Superman merchandise and bullied for having Superman's name. Superman is seen as almost a perfect being as a hero, and I could easily see why it would be annoying to be compared to such.
SPOILERS
1 thing I absolutely loved about this comic is it allowed Clark to age to an elderly man. There is a Louise that appears when he works at a Newspaper who people keep trying to set up with because of their names. It works out they have kids. I understand why they did this because they are trying to make a more realistic or “our world superman”, but I felt like this one was a little too on the nose. Ya know? I think it’s interesting since he doesn’t know where he got his powers exactly so he’s worried about his kids -- which do get his powers. I enjoyed the artwork in this. It felt very thought out, besides just being visually pleasing. Like for example the type writer in the beginning till he gets old and the typewriter stops working and the bubbles got more modern.
