Miles Morales: Spider-Man by Jason Reynolds

emotional hopeful inspiring mysterious

4.5

This is a wonderfully grounded story that explores who Miles is when he’s not Spider-Man. It gives more attention to his family and friends and less attention to his rogues gallery. It also roots Miles in his community and portrays him as a friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. It’s a great addition to Miles’ canon that shows a more emotional side of Miles as he processes the death of his uncle, and confronts the racism that exists all around him—including an incarcerated friend and racist teacher who supports slavery. The social commentary is well done and extremely nuanced, and while the book examines serious topics it also manages to be lighthearted and funny. I think fans of Miles Morales, new and old, will enjoy this YA novel.
