Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki
5.0
Yesssss, this book was exactly what I was hoping for and more! It was so wonderfully written with amazing, dynamic and real characterizations. From different walks of life, genders and orientations. This book has it all and gives you ALL the feels!
I was so happy when I was approved for this audiobook. To be honest, I had forgotten exactly what it was about, but remembered that it was a book I was super excited for. I'm kind of glad I didn't remember the exact synopsis because it made me love this book all the more going into it.
Katrina 's story is so beautiful, but also so heartbreakingly real. The story goes into a lot of the pain and confusion that trans people go through every day in just trying to be the person they know that they are. From everyday things like clothing, body image, wondering who will know and how they will be looked at. The hurtful things people say about someone they don't even know... But it also shows that it is how you see yourself and how you feel that is what really matters. That there are loving and accepting people out there, if you try not to focus so much on the negative bullshit. To hold onto those good things and just live for YOU and not for anyone else.
I fully enjoyed all the characters in this story, there are multiple stories going on here that Aoki seemlessly intertwines and I couldn't get enough of it all. Shizuka Satomi's story was quite awesome as well, and that is strewn throughout the whole book as a main storyline as well, yet seperate. I loved seeing the background and watching Shizuka find herself again and the love she had to give, not only to Katrina but other characters as well. Lan and Shirley's little side story was so good as well. Shirley learns that it's not how people see you that matters, but how you see yourself and that you can be and are more than the limits people put on you. (you'll understand more of this part when you read it)
I feel I MUST talk about the donuts as well, not only is the donut shop a big part of this story, but Lan would be very upset to see that no one had talked about the donuts! Even with all of the deep and dark undertones of this story, it was also so hopeful, loving and fun.
Aaaahhhhh, there is honestly SO much to love and talk about with this book and I want to shout about it all! But what I really think is that this is a book everyone should pick up and explore for themselves. There is literally so much about this story to fall in love with. My heart is so full after this one.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for a copy of this title in exchange for on honest review.
