I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

4.0

4/5 stars. Audio book.

"Mom didn't get better, but I will."

Used an Audible credit for this popular book that everyone has been talking about; I had to find out for myself if it was worth it. I really enjoyed this book, and it was so relatable with Jennette reading her own writing. I think most people hold the opinion that many child stars end up having severe issues as adults and McCurdy is no different in that regard. She struggles with anorexia, bulimia, body image issues, alcoholism, and her relationship with her abusive mother. I really admired that Jennette wrote this book; any child who has grown up with an abuse mom/traumatic environment can completely relate to the title and I liked the dark humor. McCurdy’s writing is concise, direct, and respectful. I say respectful because there were many opportunities, she could have revealed it all, like when discussing The Creator (Dan Schneider) or Ariana Grande, but she was honest, while remaining reverent. It was so respectful that I felt like McCurdy could have shared more. Some parts of her story seem rushed and glazed over. But sharing trauma, whether it be in private therapy sessions or in a bestselling memoir, is hard and I admire the strength she had to write anything at all. It is hard to come to terms with those kinds of things alone, much less with others reading and judging your journey. Overall, I would recommend this book and it is well worth the hype.
