Captain Blood by Rafael Sabatini
4.0
The start of the pirate adventure stories. It feels like all big "pirate" media (looking at you, Pirates of the Caribbean) references Captain Blood for some of the critical ideas of piracy. This book includes the captain of the ship that always pulls through no matter the odds, a mutinous first mate who threatens to overthrow the captain, pirates that are still "good guys at heart", and the high-class lady who falls for the rugged pirate.
I enjoyed Captain Blood and suggest it to anyone who enjoys classic adventure novels. Warning, this reads like a classic adventure book. The language is dated and dense, but elegant and descriptive. That being said, the story is engaging and Captain Blood serves as a relatable character who is just trying to survive.
