The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins
5.0
The Heiress is such an addictively delicious read that I devoured it in print and the engaging audio book as I couldn’t put it down!
The powerful McTavish family, wealthy and entrenched in North Carolina, resides in their ancestral home, Ashby House. The family's matriarch, Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore, led a fascinating life—kidnapped as a child, married and widowed four times, and adoptive mother to Camden. A decade after Ruby's passing, Cam, now an English teacher living across the country with his wife Jules, has avoided Ashby House and his inheritance. However, the sudden death of his uncle forces their return, unveiling long-held family secrets that continue to impact their lives.
Wow! This was so good! The family drama, the mysteries of the family, the largely unlikeable characters and the majestic setting of Ashby House are cleverly weaved together to create a fantastic narrative that I had to remind myself is fiction not reality. Best way I can describe this one, without giving too much away, is it was everything I loved about Evelyn Hugo, following a fascinating leading lady through the many seasons of her life, but with a darker underbelly of suspense and mystery of that had me gripped!
Highly recommend checking this one out for a pure escapist read that ticks all the boxes! I’ve already started reading another book from this talented author and can’t wait to work my way through her backlist.
