T. Kingfisher went into a spiral of researching 🍄 facts and decided to put all the knowledge she stumbled upon into a modernized retelling of the Poe classic story. And I'm sooo here for it.
I enjoyed the gothic horror, the non binary rep and the mix of fascination and disgust this story evoked on me.
I'm a big Poe's fan, so this was right up my alley.
On the not so positive side of things us the fact that the original story is very short and leaves a lot to the imagination. Kingfisher goes into more detail, brings more context to the story. Which, in a way, is positive, but it slows down a bit the pace and makes certainly scenes a tad repetitive. But maybe that's me being persnickety.
Overall, it's a great novella and I'll recommend it to anyone that loves gothic horror, dark vibes and Poe's stories
