The Uncanny by Sigmund Freud
4.0
Although I'd obviously heard of this essay, as well as Freud's other ones, I'd never actually read the original before. This was really helpful to read alongside E.T.A Hoffman's 'The Sandman' because Freud actually references the story in his text.
This essay is really insightful into instances of the uncanny and why we feel this in both real life and literature; though Freud does pay closer attention to the uncanny in real life.
It was very fascinating to learn more about the derivatives of the word uncanny / heimlich as well as their use in our day-to-day lives. I would definitely recommend this essay to anyone who is interested in gothic tales as well as the psychoanalysis behind these phenonema.
