The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

5.0

I was afraid to read this book and find it disappointing, but I was oh so wrong. Of course I loved the primary story and its very effective portrayal of police brutality and racism, but more than that was the complete immersion into the culture of the characters. The tension between community and self preservation, the struggle around identity, the complexity of the moral questions posed... this book is incredibly thought provoking and emotionally charged. I loved reading it.
