A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow

4.0

I was confused right in the beginning because Morrow throws us into an alternate Portland without a whole lot of explanation. I had to google the mythology behind “elokos” but the author’s take is different in the book, so I was still a little lost.

However!

I’m so glad I stuck with it, because the payoff was great. This is the kind of YA I love ! The fantastical (sirens, sprites, gargoyles, and more!) mixed with a bit of mystery and a bit of romance. The author tackles important topics such as racism, police brutality, protesting, police response to protest (full riot gear), living in silence, and being brave enough to live your truth.

Recommend!!
