Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski

4.0

Sword of Destiny was a truly magnified reading, better than The Last Wish. Geralt got deeper here. Monsters were less prominent, with the focus being mainly on relationships and negotiations. Some of the stories, like in all collections, weren’t as good as others, and some were incredible. Overall I had to give it 4 stars as I was blown away by some of what I read. Here's how I rated them:

The Bounds of Reason: 5 Stars
What a great story. There was a huge cast and it was handled so well. All of the characters were so vivid with individual personalities. also I liked the way Gerald and Yennefer had the same principle when it came to slaying dragons, and the way they appreciated this creature.

A Shard of Ice: 4 Stars
The most believable, gut-wrenching, heartbreaking piece of fantasy fiction I’ve read. I don’t believe I have ever experienced the tragedy of a love-triangle so powerfully. Apart from a slightly disconcerting over-mention of breasts; this particular story was ripe with the fruit of a slightly breast-obsessed author

Eternal Flame: 3 Stars
Maybe the most fun story in the collection, we see Geralt visiting the great city of Novigrad and have to deal with a doppelganger. A smart and funny story, which has a quest directly related to A Little Sacrifice.

A Little Sacrifice: 4 Stars
Is a story about mermaids and thwarted romance which takes an interesting turn towards the Lovecraftian and becomes one of the more foreboding stories in the series. Beautiful breasts, again, make an appearance.

The Sword of Destiny: 5 Stars
It had a slow start, and then turned amazing. This is everything I expect from fantasy – to be enchanted, to believe in magic, to believe in mythical creatures, to believe in destiny. I was swept away.

Something More: 5 Stars. Being a series of hallucinations, the confusion made this somewhat difficult to figure out what was going on. But that is Andrzej’s genius; he brought it all back while simultaneously throwing back to The Last Wish and expanding on that book
