this isn’t . . . a wholly unenjoyable book, let me get that out of the way. i did like the chapter about the husband and wife but everything else was kind of middling for me. might be an issue of translation, but the writing was stiff and awkward at points and the disconnect from japanese culture to the english translation is a gulf! i think I’d get more out of this emotionally if it was like a movie or play or something
