Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada
5.0
I got this book last year in a Heathrow bookstore as I awaited my flight back home. They had a buy two books for ten pounds deal. I thought I was getting a deal, and I did, but I got more than I expected. This book rings true more now than ever. It is a story about a couple who--in their own way--attempt to resist the atrocities happening in Nazi Germany. Perhaps their attempt doesn't garner the results they expect, but in doing so they remain true to their call for goodness. They stay true to their moral and ethical ideologies, which is an immense feat in a dictatorship where everyone is under surveillance. Read it. Learn from it--it's not a morality story or perhaps it could be, but it doesn't feel like it. Educate yourself. Stand up for what's right. There's no need for history to repeat itself, especially when it parallels Nazi Germany.
