This book is unreal and a must read. It is inspired by a real life story of two young Black girls being sterilized and is told from the point of view of the nurse who worked with the girls. Honestly, this book is so sad because it happened - and it is still happening. Women and children are being sterilized and have a history of sterilization for being poor, disabled, Black, Native, imprisoned. News reports highlighted the mass sterilization of women and children who had crossed the border. The impact on India and Erica, the two children in this book is devastating, heartbreaking and all too real. Civil was a super interesting character - at times you understand everything she is doing and why but sometimes she is being a savior, crossing the line, making it about her.
Overall, I read this when news that Roe v Wade was most likely going to be overturned came out and it is frustrating to know that a women's choice over her own body has been so regulated for hundreds of years. And we just have to keep fighting.
